How to Delete Reddit Comments from One Subreddit Only

Maybe you don't want to nuke your entire Reddit history. Maybe you just want to erase your activity from one specific community - a subreddit you've left, one that's become toxic, or one where you shared too many personal details. Reddit doesn't give you any way to do this. Here's how to delete comments from a specific subreddit without touching the rest of your history.

Why delete comments from a specific subreddit?

Your Reddit activity is scattered across dozens or hundreds of subreddits. Not all of that history carries the same risk. You might have years of harmless comments in hobby subreddits, but a handful of oversharing in a mental health community, a political subreddit, or a local city sub that makes you identifiable.

Deleting everything feels drastic if you still use Reddit. The targeted approach is more practical: identify the subreddits where your exposure is highest and wipe just those. Common reasons people do this include leaving a subreddit after a community blowup, cleaning up comments in NSFW communities, removing personal stories from advice or relationship subreddits, or scrubbing location-specific comments from a city or university subreddit.

If you're unsure which subreddits to target first, the Insights dashboard in Wipe for Reddit shows your full activity breakdown by subreddit - sorted by comment count or karma - so you can quickly see where you've been most active and where you've been most downvoted.

Step-by-step: delete Reddit comments from one subreddit

1

Download Wipe for Reddit

Download the free desktop app for macOS, Windows, or Linux. It runs 100% locally - no data leaves your machine.

2

Sign in with your Reddit account

Open the app and click Sign in with Reddit. A real Reddit login page opens inside the app. Your credentials go directly to Reddit - Wipe for Reddit never sees or stores them.

3

Open the Comments tab and filter by subreddit

Once your content loads, switch to the Comments tab. Use the subreddit filter dropdown to select the specific community you want to clean up. Alternatively, click any subreddit in the Insights chart to jump directly to its comments.

4

Select all filtered comments and delete

With the subreddit filter active, click Select All - this only selects comments from the filtered subreddit, not your entire history. Then click Delete Selected. The app uses randomized delays between deletions to stay under Reddit's rate limits.

Can you do the same thing with posts?

Yes. The same subreddit filtering works in the Posts tab. If you've submitted posts to a community you want to leave cleanly, switch to Posts, apply the subreddit filter, select all, and delete. For a full walkthrough of the post deletion process, see our guide on how to bulk delete Reddit posts.

You can also combine subreddit filtering with other filters: sort by karma to find your most downvoted content in that community first, or search by keyword to target comments that mention specific personal details.

Why Reddit doesn't offer subreddit-level deletion

Reddit's native interface only lets you delete content one item at a time. There's no filter, no bulk select, and no way to target a specific subreddit. If you have thousands of comments spread across hundreds of communities, manually finding and deleting comments from one subreddit could take hours.

This is one of the main reasons people turn to third-party tools. If you're evaluating your options, our comparison of Reddit deletion tools covers the differences between desktop apps, browser extensions, and web-based services - including which ones support subreddit-level filtering.

Tips for a targeted Reddit cleanup

Start with your Insights dashboard. Before deleting anything, check which subreddits you've been most active in. You might discover forgotten activity in subreddits you haven't visited in years. Those old comments are often the most revealing because you posted them when you weren't thinking about privacy.

Prioritize local and personal subreddits. City subreddits, university subreddits, and workplace-related communities are the easiest to deanonymize you from. A comment in r/Seattle plus a comment in r/nursing narrows your identity dramatically. Read our Reddit privacy guide for more on how comment histories expose your identity.

Back up before you delete. If you want to keep a record of your comments, use Wipe for Reddit Pro's JSON export to save a local copy before deleting anything. Once a comment is deleted through Reddit's API, it's gone permanently.

Consider a periodic schedule. Some users do a monthly or quarterly cleanup - deleting comments older than a certain age or from subreddits they've left. This keeps your exposure low without giving up Reddit entirely.
